Thelma is a shy, religious young woman who leaves her rural home to attend university in Oslo. Raised in a strict Christian household, she struggles to adapt to her new environment. Her loneliness begins to lift when she befriends Anja, a charismatic classmate, and the two develop a deep emotional connection.
As Thelmaโs feelings for Anja intensify, she begins to experience terrifying seizures and unexplained supernatural phenomena. Doctors search for medical explanations, but the episodes seem to be linked to her repressed emotions and inner conflictsโespecially her struggle with her forbidden attraction.
Thelma starts to question her childhood and discovers disturbing truths about her family. Flashbacks reveal that she once unintentionally made her younger brother disappear and possibly caused her motherโs injury. Her powersโlinked to desire and suppressed emotionsโbegin to resurface in dangerous ways.
Thelmaโs parents, fearing her abilities, try to suppress her once again. However, Thelma slowly begins to embrace who she is. She learns to control her powers rather than be ruled by fear or guilt. Her confrontation with her father marks a turning point in reclaiming her autonomy.
With new self-awareness, Thelma accepts her feelings for Anja and stops trying to suppress them. In the final moments, she uses her powers to bring Anja back after mysteriously disappearing. The film ends ambiguously but powerfullyโsuggesting that Thelma is finally in control of both her identity and her extraordinary abilities.
