Lionheart (1990), directed by Sheldon Lettich, is an action-packed martial arts film that follows the journey of Lyon Gaultier, played by Jean-Claude Van Damme. However, Lyon quickly finds that his mission to assist his family is far more difficult than anticipated, especially since he has no connections, no job, and very little money. Lyon’s struggles to support his family take him into the world of underground street fighting, a brutal and illegal sport where men fight for cash prizes. With his extensive training in martial arts from his time in the French Foreign Legion, Lyon becomes a skilled and dangerous fighter. He enters the underground fight circuit to earn enough money to support his niece and nephew and help his sister-in-law. At first, Lyon’s involvement in the world of illegal street fighting is driven purely by necessity. He fights in these savage matches for the cash prize that he desperately needs to provide for his family, not fully understanding the dangerous nature of the underground fight world or the corrupt forces that control it. As he begins to rise in the ranks, Lyon encounters a series of increasingly difficult opponents, each fight more brutal than the last. His strength, skill, and fighting prowess quickly make him a fan favorite in the underground fighting scene, but Lyon also attracts the attention of Joshua, a businessman who organizes the fights and profits off the exploitation of the fighters. As Lyon advances in the tournament, he forms an unlikely bond with Mac, a fellow fighter who serves as both a friend and mentor to Lyon.
