Nan Astley is a young woman living in the seaside town of Whitstable in Victorian England. She leads a quiet life helping in her familyβs oyster restaurant but becomes enchanted by Kitty Butler, a male impersonator performing at the local theatre. Nan is drawn not only to the stage but to Kitty herself, and soon follows her to London, where she begins a journey of self-discovery.
In London, Nan becomes Kittyβs dresser and later joins her act as a fellow male impersonator. The two women begin a secret romantic relationship. However, their happiness is short-lived when Kitty, fearful of public scandal, ends the affair and marries a man, devastating Nan and forcing her to survive on her own.
Eventually, Nan breaks free from toxic relationships and meets Florence, a kind and politically active woman. With Florence, Nan finds not only genuine love but also a sense of purpose. The series ends on a hopeful note, as Nan embraces her identity and future with confidence, no longer hiding who she is.
