The Raid (2012)ย
In the slums of Jakarta, a notorious drug lord named Tama Riyadi controls a heavily fortified high-rise apartment complex, which serves as a sanctuary for criminals, murderers, and gangsters. The police, eager to put an end to his reign, organize a secretive SWAT operation led by Sergeant Jaka. Among the team is a highly skilled rookie officer named Rama, who is not only committed to the mission but also has a personal reason for being thereโhis estranged brother, Andi, is rumored to be working as one of Tamaโs top enforcers. Unbeknownst to the team, their operation is not officially sanctioned, meaning no reinforcements will be sent if things go wrong. As the elite unit enters the building and begins clearing floors, they encounter minimal resistance at first, taking down several criminals quietly. However, their presence is soon discovered, and before they can reach Tamaโs penthouse, he announces through the buildingโs intercom that any tenant who kills a police officer will be granted free lifelong residence. Suddenly, the entire complex turns against them. With the exits blocked and no backup coming, the officers are ambushed in a deadly assault. Heavily armed gangsters massacre most of the SWAT members in brutal fashion, leaving only a few survivors, including Rama, Sergeant Jaka, and Lieutenant Wahyu. As they fight their way through the labyrinth-like corridors, the team is forced to split up. Wahyu, who orchestrated the mission, reveals his ulterior motivesโhe is acting out of desperation to cover up corruption within the police force and sees Tamaโs elimination as his way to regain favor. Meanwhile, Rama takes on the relentless criminals alone, using his elite hand-to-hand combat skills to survive. He engages in multiple intense fights, showcasing his incredible silat martial arts ability, using everything from knives to broken furniture as weapons. Along the way, he rescues a wounded teammate, Bowo, and secures a temporary hiding spot in an apartment owned by a civilian, who risks his life to shield them from the gangsters searching for survivors.
While battling his way toward Tamaโs headquarters, Rama finally encounters Andi, who confirms that he is now Tamaโs right-hand man and has no intention of leaving the criminal world. Despite this, he cannot bring himself to kill his own brother. Andi secretly protects Rama by tricking Tama into believing that Rama is already dead. However, Tama grows suspicious and orders his sadistic enforcer, Mad Dog, to execute Andi. Unlike Tama, who relies on guns, Mad Dog prefers to kill with his bare hands, considering it a more honorable way to fight. Andi is brutally beaten and left restrained, awaiting execution. Before Mad Dog can finish the job, Rama arrives, leading to a breathtaking and vicious two-on-one battle. The fight is long and exhausting, with Mad Dog proving to be a nearly unstoppable force. But through sheer determination, Rama and Andi finally manage to overpower and kill him.
With Mad Dog dead, Rama turns his attention to Tama, who is now vulnerable. Meanwhile, Wahyu, desperate to cover his tracks, betrays and executes Sergeant Jaka, leaving Rama and Andi to deal with Tama alone. However, Wahyuโs attempt to manipulate Tama fails, as the crime lord reveals that the police force is deeply corrupt, and his death will change nothing. Enraged, Wahyu kills Tama in a fit of frustration but is ultimately left without any leverage or protection. As the remaining survivors prepare to leave, Andi tells Rama that he cannot return home with him, as his position in the criminal underworld ensures his survival. However, as a parting gesture, he uses his influence to grant Rama, Bowo, and Wahyu safe passage out of the building. The film ends with Rama leading the remaining survivors out of the complex, exhausted but alive. Andi watches from afar, choosing to remain in the world he has built for himself. As Rama walks away, he knows that his journey is far from over. The mission may have been a failure, but the corruption that led to it is still very much alive, leaving open the possibility of even greater battles ahead.
