The Exorcist: Believer (2023)

Thirteen years after a devastating earthquake in Haiti claimed the life of his pregnant wife, Victor Fielding has been raising his daughter, Angela, as a single father in a quiet Georgia town. Though still haunted by his past, Victor has built a stable life for himself and Angela, who is now a teenager. One afternoon, Angela and her best friend, Katherine, venture into the woods to perform a ritual in hopes of contacting Angelaโ€™s deceased mother. Hours pass, and they fail to return home. A frantic search ensues, and after three agonizing days, the girls are discovered miles away with no recollection of what happened. Initially relieved, their families soon notice that something is deeply wrongโ€”the girls begin exhibiting unsettling behavior, growing increasingly violent, erratic, and speaking in strange, guttural voices. It becomes clear that an unnatural force has taken hold of them.

As Angela and Katherineโ€™s conditions deteriorate, their families grow desperate. Victor, a skeptic with no religious background, seeks out help from doctors and psychiatrists, but none can provide an explanation. Katherineโ€™s deeply religious parents believe their daughter is possessed and turn to their church for guidance. Meanwhile, Victor is led to Chris MacNeil, a woman who has spent decades researching possession after her own daughter, Regan, was taken by a demon in The Exorcist (1973). Chris warns them that they are dealing with something far more dangerous than they realize. When she confronts the possessed girls, the demon mocks her, revealing that it knows intimate details about Regan, who has been estranged from her mother for years. Before Chris can do anything, the demon violently attacks her, blinding her in one eye and leaving her severely injured. With Chris incapacitated, the families and community must take matters into their own hands.

With time running out, a group of religious leaders from different faithsโ€”Catholic, Baptist, Pentecostal, and even a Haitian vodou practitionerโ€”join forces in an unconventional exorcism. However, the demon, now fully in control of Angela and Katherine, plays a cruel game, forcing the families to make a horrifying choice: only one girl can survive. If they choose incorrectly, both will perish. In a moment of desperation, Katherineโ€™s parents plead for their daughterโ€™s life, unknowingly condemning her. The demon drags Katherineโ€™s soul to hell in a grotesque and agonizing display, leaving her family shattered. Angela, freed from possession, is left deeply traumatized but alive. Victor, once a skeptic, finally acknowledges the power of faith and human resilience. In the aftermath, Chris MacNeil is visited by Regan, who has finally returned after years of estrangement, bringing a bittersweet sense of closure. Yet, as Victor and Angela try to move forward, the lingering presence of evil suggests that their ordeal may not be over, leaving the door open for future horrors.
